Honor Academy Speech & Debate Tournament Results

At Honor Academy, students compete under both Honor Academy and school Banners

Intro

A proven record of competitive excellence!

Our students compete — and win — at the highest levels of competitive speech and debate. From local invitationals to NSDA Nationals, the Tournament of Champions (TOC), and CHSSA State Championships, Honor Academy has built a consistent track record of competitive excellence. Our students compete both as Honor Academy representatives and under their own school banners — and our coaches adapt their training style to match each student’s unique competitive environment, whether that’s a public school circuit, private school league, or independent tournament track.

What makes these results even more remarkable is that Honor Academy students compete in two distinct ways. Some represent Honor Academy directly at open tournaments. Others compete under their own school’s banner — from Whitney High School, Oxford Academy, Sunny Hills, Cypress, Troy, Los Alamitos, Brea Olinda, Cerritos, Portola, and many other public and private schools in Southern California and Los Angeles area — where they apply everything they’ve learned from our coaches in their school’s competitive environment. Our coaching staff adapts to each student’s unique circuit, league rules, and competitive context. Whether your child competes independently or through their school, Honor Academy’s coaching meets them where they are.

MS Experienced Hoya PF

2026 Jack Howe Memorial Tournament

Jack Howe Memorial Tournament Recap

We’re so proud of our Honor Academy debaters who competed at the Jack Howe Memorial Tournament in Long Beach this past weekend! For most of our novice students, this was their very first tournament, and they handled it with real poise and confidence.

Novice Public Forum – Finalist!
Congratulations to L. Freitas and T. Jha, who finished as finalists in a field of 57 teams! They went 5-1 in preliminary rounds. In elimination rounds they won close decisions in octafinals and quarterfinals, then won their semifinal round 3-0. They lost the final round on a narrow 2-1 decision. What a run!

We’re also excited for I. Shim and C. Kim, who reached double-octafinals with a 4-2 record at their very first tournament. That’s a terrific debut!

Big congratulations as well to P. Katru & D. Sahu, E. Park & C. Park, A. Binny & C. Lee, and J. Lee & C. Wen. Each of them gained valuable experience in their first competition. D. Sahu earned the highest speaker points on our Novice PF squad.

Novice Lincoln-Douglas
Our novice competitors K. Hwang and Y. Munnaluri each finished with a winning-level 3-3 record in a 57-competitor field. That’s a strong start in a challenging solo event!

Open Lincoln-Douglas
In a large field of 106 competitors, C. Shin, L. Choi, A. Kim, and A. Sharma each went 3-3, and C. Shin placed in the top 30 in speaker points. A special thank you and shoutout to E. Lee, C. Shin, and A. Kim for bravely competing in the Open LD division as 8th graders, going up against experienced high school debaters primarily in 10th through 12th grade. That takes a lot of courage and we are incredibly proud of them!

Thank you to our coaches, parents, and judges for supporting our students. We can’t wait to see how they grow this season!

2026 NSDA Season Opener

Our Speech and Debate team kicked off the 2026–2027 season this weekend at the NSDA Season Opener — and what a way to start. From first-time novices to our varsity competitors, every student who stepped into a round represented Honor Academy with focus, poise, and real growth. Here’s a look at how they did.

Varsity Lincoln-Douglas
A. Sharma battled through a competitive varsity LD field to reach Run Off in his very first varsity tournament of the season. A strong signal of what’s ahead this year.

Middle School Lincoln-Douglas
C. Shin had a standout showing, advancing to Quarterfinals and earning the 3rd Speaker Award — recognition not just for winning rounds, but for delivering some of the sharpest speaking in the entire division.

Middle School Public Forum
L. Freitas and T. Jha teamed up to reach Quarterfinals, showing the kind of chemistry and preparation that usually takes a full season to build — and they found it in their opening tournament.

A Season Opener Full of Firsts
Just as exciting as the elimination-round finishes were the results we saw across our novice and middle school divisions, where several of our debaters stepped into their very first competitive rounds and held their own against experienced opponents. The same was true at the varsity level, where a group of first-time varsity debaters competed for the first time in Honor Academy’s toughest division and came away with real, hard-earned experience.

Congratulations to every competitor who took the stage this weekend — those who broke to elims and those who simply walked into their first round and gave it everything. That’s what starting a season is about, and it’s exactly the kind of foundation that turns into deep tournament runs later this year.

Here’s to a strong 2026–2027 season ahead.

2026 CHSSA Middle School State Championship

🏆 Honor Academy Shines at the CHSSA Middle School State Championship! 🏆

We are incredibly proud of our competitors who represented Honor Academy at the CHSSA Middle School State Championship — one of the most prestigious and competitive tournaments in California!

As the SoCal-based club team with the highest achievements in both Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas, we are thrilled to share the outstanding results from our students in the two most competitive and heavily contested divisions of the championship:

Lincoln-Douglas (LD)
Quarterfinalist — Emme Ngo
Triple Octafinalist — Hansica Sarvan
Triple Octafinalist — Claire Shin
Triple Octafinalist — Elise Lee

Public Forum (PF)
Quarterfinalist — Ananya Ekbote & Aarav Jhunjhunwala
Quarterfinalist — Soyeon Kim & Katelyn Pham
Quarterfinalist — Marissa Ho & Siksha Srivatsa
Octafinalist — Katie Jo & Aimee Kim ⭐ (Undefeated in Preliminary Rounds!)
Octafinalist — Elizabeth Lin & Ellie Oh

What makes these achievements even more meaningful is how our students competed. In a tournament where some competitors resorted to questionable tactics and unsportsmanlike strategies simply to win, every single Honor Academy student competed with integrity, respect, and a genuine commitment to the educational values of speech and debate. Not one of our competitors broke a rule or compromised their character — and that, above all, is something we are truly proud of.

At Honor Academy, we believe that true success is built on honest competition, meaningful communication, and the pursuit of knowledge — and our students proved exactly that on one of the biggest stages in California middle school debate.

Congratulations to all of our competitors, coaches, and families who made this possible. We cannot wait to see what comes next! 🌟

2026 10th Annual Middle School TOC hosted by UK

Public Forum

Middle School Public Forum — National Tournament (228 Entries / 456 Debaters)

Honor Academy’s middle school Public Forum debaters competed in one of the largest and most competitive fields we have ever entered — a pool of 228 entries, representing 456 total debaters from across the United States and several Asian countries.

What makes these results extraordinary is not just the placements — it is the context.

Our debaters competed against teams with years of experience and pre-written cases prepared at an advanced level. Our students competed with debate cases they researched and wrote themselves. Several of our debaters were competing for the very first time.

Every single one of them held their ground. We could not be more proud.

Results:
Triple-Octofinalist: A. Jhunjhunwala & A. Ekbote
Triple-Octofinalist: M. Ho & A. Raichura
10th Speaker: E. Oh — Top speaker record among ALL California debaters in the field
12th Speaker: E. Lin
48th Speaker: A. Ganesh — First-time competitor!

Several other Honor Academy debaters — including first-time competitors — achieved 3-3 records against experienced opponents with professionally prepared cases. This is a testament to the quality of research, preparation, and independent thinking we develop in every one of our students.

Honor Academy’s approach has always been to build genuine skills — not to hand students pre-written arguments, but to teach them how to think, research, and compete on their own. These results prove that approach works, even on the biggest stages.

Lincoln Douglas

Lincoln-Douglas Debate — 172 Entries

Honor Academy’s Lincoln-Douglas debaters faced one of their toughest challenges yet — a 172-entry field of some of the most experienced LD competitors in the country. What made this tournament especially demanding was that our debaters were simultaneously working on two different debate topics at once, requiring double the research, double the preparation, and double the mental focus going into competition. They delivered.

Results:
Runoff: C. Shin
Runoff: J. Rajapogal
15th Speaker: C. Shin — out of 172 entries

Advancing to runoff in a 172-entry LD field is a remarkable achievement under any circumstances. Doing it while managing two concurrent debate topics makes it even more so. C. Shin’s 15th Speaker finish is a standout result that reflects not just competitive skill, but the kind of adaptability and mental toughness that Honor Academy coaching builds in every student.

We are incredibly proud of both C. Shin and J. Rajapogal, and of every debater who stepped up to compete under these demanding conditions.
