SAT vs. ACT: which test is right for your child — and how to prepare this summer

One of the most common questions we hear from families in Cerritos is: “Should my child take the SAT or the ACT?” It’s a great question — and the honest answer is that it depends on your child. Here’s everything you need to know to make the right call.

What’s the difference between the SAT and ACT?

Both the SAT and ACT are standardized college admissions tests accepted by virtually every college and university in the United States. Neither one is universally “better” — but each test plays to different strengths.

The SAT, administered by College Board, focuses heavily on evidence-based reading, writing, and math. It rewards careful reasoning, reading comprehension, and the ability to work through multi-step problems. The digital SAT — now the standard format — is adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section adjusts based on your performance in the first.

The ACT, administered by ACT Inc., covers English, math, reading, and science. Its science section is a key differentiator — it tests data interpretation and scientific reasoning rather than memorized facts. The ACT also tends to move faster, with more questions in less time.

Which test should your child take?

The best way to decide is to have your child take a full-length practice test for each — then compare the results. Most students have a natural lean toward one or the other. That said, here are some general patterns we’ve seen work well:

Your child may do better on the SAT if they…

Enjoy reading and writing, prefer fewer questions with more time per question, excel at careful reasoning, or find science-heavy content stressful.

Your child may do better on the ACT if they…

Work quickly under time pressure, are strong in science and data analysis, prefer straightforward questions, or feel confident across all four core subject areas.

Why summer is the best time to prepare

Summer is hands down the best window for SAT and ACT preparation. Without the pressure of daily homework and school deadlines, students can focus deeply, build consistent study habits, and make real, measurable score gains before the school year begins.

Students who prepare over the summer consistently arrive at fall test dates more confident, better practiced, and significantly better prepared than those who try to squeeze in prep during the school year.

For students in Cerritos and the surrounding area — including Artesia, Norwalk, Lakewood, and La Palma — the August and October SAT test dates are the most popular targets for students who begin preparing this summer.

How Honor Academy helps students prepare for the SAT

At Honor Academy in Cerritos, our SAT prep program is built around each student’s specific strengths and gaps — not a generic curriculum. We start by identifying exactly where your child needs the most support, then build a focused plan to get them there.

Our students also benefit from something most SAT programs don’t offer: a competitive speech and debate program running alongside. The critical reading, vocabulary, and argumentation skills built in debate directly strengthen SAT Reading and Writing performance — it’s one of the most effective and underrated forms of test prep available.
